Update - Heather School Closure & Air Quality

October 27, 2019

Dear San Carlos Community,

Heather School will be closed on Monday, October 28 because the power has been shutoff. At this time, no other schools have lost power and all other schools will be open on Monday. We will continue to monitor the situation and will notify you if we have any updated information regarding power outages and school on Tuesday. It is a difficult decision to close schools, but we feel this decision is in the best interest of our Heather families and staff.

Air Quality
We continue to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) in San Carlos using
www.AirNow.Gov. According to the website, our air quality index for tomorrow is expected to be in the 80 range and recommends that unusually sensitive people should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion. We allow students to play outside and conduct “business as usual” if the AQI is 100 or below. Once the AQI is 101 or more, we will move to our “Shelter in Place” protocols, isolating students and staff from the outdoor environment and providing greater protection from external airborne contaminants.

Parents/guardians of students with respiratory conditions such as asthma, may choose to pick up students early from school or keep their students at home. Absences for this reason or any reason related to air quality concerns will be excused. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (650) 508-7333.

Thank you for your patience and support as this situation is evolving.

Sincerely,
Michelle Harmeier

Superintendent
