Sheila has a Master's degree in public health, with a focus on health policy and programs. She comes to the SCSD with over a decade of experience in quality improvement, community health programs, health education, and community engagement. Much of her previous work has focused on youth health, including immunization tracking and compliance, interventions and policies to reduce the burden of childhood asthma, and tobacco cessation research and education. She has also spent the last 6 years as a member of the San Mateo County Behavioral Health Commission, advocating for and providing oversight for the expansion of youth mental health programs and policies.

Sarah Cassanego stated, "As Board President, I am thrilled to announce Sheila Brar as our new Director of Health and Wellness for the San Carlos School District. Sheila's extensive background in public health, coupled with her dedication to improving youth health and advocating for mental health programs, makes her an ideal fit for this vital role. Her leadership will be instrumental in advancing our commitment to the well-being of our students and staff."

Sheila will support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the District’s PK-8 Health and Wellness program to improve the health and wellness of all students and staff at each school site in the district. This position is funded through a grant partnership with the Sequoia Healthcare District. The grant award is contingent on having this position and also supports other wellness positions in SCSD, including school nurses and a portion of school counseling.

Assistant Superintendent Hans Barber said, “I am excited to welcome Sheila to our district. As a member of our San Carlos community and a parent/uber volunteer, her wealth of experience in public health and her passion for supporting youth health align perfectly with our district's goals. With her leadership, we look forward to enhancing our PK-8 Health and Wellness program and ensuring the holistic well-being of our students and staff. We are fortunate to have her expertise and dedication on our team."

Please join us in welcoming Sheila to our outstanding team of educators!
